Climate Control in Conservatories
Appeal recently commissioned an independent study by leading environmental consultancy Faber Maunsell to examine the thermal effect of various types of blinds in a conservatory throughout the year.
Evidence from the study shows:
• For a typical hot summer day in July, the addition of blinds to the conservatory can significantly reduce internal temperatures by up to 8°c.
• Alu-Pleat® and Solar R® blind fabrics, both exclusive to Appeal, offer the highest reduction in internal temperatures.
• Blinds covering the conservatory roof are 3 times more effective at reducing internal temperatures than blinds covering the side windows.

Conservatory Roof Blinds
It’s not just the windows that need shading for conservatories, but obviously and more importantly the roof! There are a few things to consider for conservatory roof blinds, such as the style of blind, the material, the colour and design and lastly the price.
Roof blinds are very important to provide a pleasant environment by keeping out the suns glare and making it much easier to maintain a regulated environment. That is, not too hot, not too cold, not too bright and not too dull.
Conservatory Pleated Blinds
Pleated blinds are probably the most attractive solution for conservatory blinds. They have a modern elaborate appearance and are available in a huge range of frabics and colours. They are an affordable alternative to pinoleum blinds and also have the advantage of being made with reflective material to maintain temperatures in the conservatory, The pleats typically come in 25mm width but are increasingly available in 20mm.
Pleated blinds are also extremely versatile and can be used in any type of conservatory including Edwardian, Georgian, Victorian and lean-to style conservatories. Made to measure pleated blinds are readily available and you can add the a remote control option for complete control.
Conservatory Solar Blinds
The most popular and cheapest way to extend a home is to add a conservatory. However, many people are unprepared for how hot a conservatory can become in the summer. it is not surprising given the amount of glass used to build a conservatory. In order to maintain a more constant and comfortable temperature, an effecient way of reflecting the sun’s heat is needed. Great advances have been made in the reflective qualities of the frabic used to make conservatory blinds.
Conservatory Pinoleum Blinds
Pinoleum blinds are probably the most traditional style of conservatory blind. Pinoleum is the name given to strips of thin wood which are woven together in different patterns. Pinoleum blinds come in Roman or roll-up style. A great quality to pinoleum blinds is that they let in a diffused light through the small gaps between the strips of wood. This gives them a great aesthetic quality. However, the payback for this is that you cannot really great the kind of efficiency that synthetic blinds give when it comes to reflecting heat and maintaining a more stable temperature in your conservatory. However, the natural beauty from using wood blinds does compensate for this and if extremes of temperature and light are not such a big concern the pinoleum are always an attractive addition to your conservatory.
Conservatory Roller Blinds
Conservatories are often spoiled by the extremes of temperature that can occur in the depths of winter and the height of summer. Also, bright light can damage furniture and ruin your favourite plants. Conversely you do not want to obscure the views of your garden by covering up all the windows. Roller blinds make for a great solution here. Easily installed and at the lower end of the budget range, roller blinds come in either standard sizes or made to measure. Alternatively you can easily adjust them yourself and manufacturers usually provide instructions on how to do this. Roller blinds are typically made from synthetic material which is durable and easily cleaned. Also, you can get reflective material to help keep the conservatory cool in summer.
